To be honest, nobody really knows where the operator's symbol originated, but it is speculated that the "x" over the circle is to signify the fact that he has no face.

As of other symbols, proxies generally create one for themselves, like a calling card.

That all depends on what you want to believe.
The creator of TribeTwelve is a Proxy, though he may not know it.
As are the creators of MarbleHornets, EverymanHYBRID, and the others.
They do what he wishes without even realizing it...
